O My Stars
I know I’m way behind the curve here, but it’s only recently come to my attention that Michael Hurley is the best. I’ve seen him described in the past as the “godfather of freak folk” or something similar, a description that should make everyone shudder. Hurley deserves better — he’s basically a deep well of American song, a guy who has tapped into the reservoir, the flowing river of song. How many water metaphors can I use? I think the last one is the best, since Hurley is all about flow. So laid-back that he’s intense, he can locate the terror in Chuck Berry’s “Oh Carol” (it’s there!) and the almost joyful freedom in Hank William’s lament, “I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You.” This live set from 1976 (location uncertain — Portland, OR?) features Hurley and a ragged-but-exactly-right backing band wandering through nine gorgeous songs that make me think of the type of record Dylan might have made had he never left the basement back in 1967. O my stars!
